This plot of regulated land with an asphalt road frontage and water supply is at the edge of a lovely village 8km from the ‘white’ charming town of Balchik. The splendid beach of the resort of Albena is less than 20 minutes drive, and to the Bulgarian sea capital Varna and its International Airport only 40 minutes, which makes the property ideally located.
The biggest attraction nearby are the wonderful Botanical Gardens of Balchik, spreading over ten hectares, which surround the small summer palace of the Romanian Queen Marie.(The area was part of Romania between 1913 and 1940). The attractive villa has the unusual addition of a minaret. The lush gardens descend towards the sea in six terraces – one for each of Marie’s children, the sixth one (truncated by the cliff) symbolizing Mircea who died at the age of two.
The Gardens are the habitat of over 3000 astonishing plant species of which cacti alone are over 250 so the Botanical Gardens boast the second biggest collection of cacti in Europe. There are over three thousand varieties of shrubs, trees, roses and flowers, set among streams, waterfalls, and ornamental channels. There is a rock garden, a formal French garden with clipped box cones and geometric beds, and interspersed are stone thrones, seats, pillars and ornaments collected by the Queen. Having entertained many lovers here, she left instructions for her heart to be buried within the Quiet Nest’s chapel (containing Marie’s portrait and an icon from Cyprus) in a jeweled casket that was later hurriedly removed from Balchik in 1940, when Bulgaria regained the southern Dobrudja.
